. Vocabulary

reflect vt. 反映,反射,表现事物的性质

Mirrors reflect light.

This wall can reflect heat waves.

This novel reflects the life of Chinese people after liberation.

lack vt. 缺乏,没有 They lack the money to send him to university.

drag vt. 拖,拉  The animals are so tired that they drag their legs.

accessible  adj.  available

This is a document which is not accessible to the public.

Nothing is not accessible for him in the world.

be accustomed to   习惯于  = be used to doing = be / feel at home with sth.

They had been accustomed to seeing people suffering from heat, thirst and starvation in this area.

They are accustomed to getting up early to do exercises.

You should practice using the computer until you are at home with the keys.

accustomed   adj. 惯有的

I am familiar with his accustomed smile.

assume  vt. 假设,假装, 揣测,认为, 从事,担任

We can’t assume anything in this case.

I am assuming that the present situation is going to continue.

We must assume him to be innocent until he is proved to be guilty.

He assumed his new responsibility last week.

We can be there on time, assuming that nobody is late.

= We can be there on time if nobody is late.

/ Supposing nobody is late, we can be there on time.

/ Providing / Provided nobody is late, we can be there on time.

assumption n. 假设,假定,假装

The theory is based on a series of assumptions.

Their assumption of an air of confidence fooled nobody.

approve of 赞成,赞许 

My parents don’t approve of my smoking.

I approve of your trying to earn some money in your spare time, but you can not neglect your study.

I don’t approve of wasting time.

approve  vt. 批准,通过

The meeting has approved the report.

The resolution has been approved 68 to 22 with 20 abstention.

urge  vt. 力劝,强烈要求

We Chinese people have urged the equality of the nations, big or small.

They urge me to take charge of the company./ They urge me into taking charge of the company.

The public urge that the government should take some effective steps.

insist, order, command, advise, suggest, propose, ask, require, request, demand.

He insisted that we should not give up without reaching our goals.

They order that no one should fire without permission.

beneficial  adj. 有益的,有用的   Drinking milk everyday is beneficial to your health.

benefit  vt./ vi.  This medicine will benefit you.

You will benefit from/ by the medicine.

Everyone can benefit from daily reading.

for the benefit of  为……的利益

The government decided to give every child free education for the benefit of common people.

adapt  使适应  It’s better to adapt your thinking to the new situation.

They improved the machine to adapt it for a particular use.

改写  This is a play adapted from a novel.

The books adapted for middle school students are available everywhere.

 

二、Reading   My teacher

1. I haven’t seen Mr Jenkins since I left school but I often think about him.

A   since  连词 自从……以后

How have you been since I saw you last? (自从我上次见你)你这一段时间还好吗?

They have seen each other often since they met.

It is 30 years since he joined revolution.

作连词表示“自从……”,我们常常用ever 来修饰since. ever since 还可以表示从那以后,在句子中作状语。

I haven’t seen him ever since.

He went to Beijing in 1950, and has lived there ever since.

since  因为,既然

He didn’t come, since he was busy.

Since this method doesn’t work, let’s try another.

since 介词

He has lived a happy life since then.

I have changed several jobs since 1999.

B think about 思考,考虑    She is thinking about Tom’s suggestion.

think of 想起,想到       I often think of the great man who led us to a happy life.

think over 仔细考虑,反复斟酌   I think it is a good way. You’d better think it over.

2. I suppose I was a bit lazy and now I wish I had done more work, especially in maths.

I wish I was as successful with all my students as I was with Graham.

My wife often wishes that I had chosen a job with less stress but I love what I do.

wish 希望   I wish to travel with my family next month.

I wish you to fetch my book here.

我们经常会希望某事,有时是可以实现的,有时却是实现不了的。

Sometimes I wish I could phone him and ask for his opinion.

I wish I were a bird.

I wish my grandpa hadn’t passed away last year.

如果某种希望是无法实现的,我们就使用虚拟语气。如果是对现在或将来没有发生的事情的虚拟,用过去时态;如果是对过去事情的虚拟,则用过去完成时态。与之相同的还有:

I would rather I hadn’t known you.

if only        If only you cleaned the whole house!

4. He used to explain things with lots of practical examples and simplified things that seemed difficult. 

used to do   过去常常做某事

He used to drive after drinking. It was so dangerous.

表示过去常常做某事我们还可以使用would.

He would come to see me when we lived in London.

will 也可以表示习惯,指现在的习惯性动作。

I will read books for half an hour before I go to sleep every day.

5. I know that I wasn’t a willing student and I shouldn’t have been so difficult at school, but it was probably because I lacked confidence in myself.
