第二部分 阅读理解
(共25小题。第一节每小题2分,第二节每小题1分;满分45分)
第一节 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
A businessman must keep records of the money he takes in
and the money he spends. The work of keeping such records is called
bookkeeping. The work of deciding how the records should be set up is called
accounting. An accountant also finds out, by studying the records, whether or
not a business is doing well. The accountant must know many things about the
business.
Suppose a man owns a small clothing store, he keeps records
that show that he spent money for newspaper advertising, and for suits, shirts,
shoes, and neckties to sell to his customers. He had to pay a young man to help
him in the store. He also paid rent and had other expenses.
At the end of the year, he must take an inventory. That is,
he counts how many pieces of clothing he has on hand. Then he must find out
exactly how many he sold, how much money he took in, and how much money he
spent in running the business. If he took in more than he spent, he made a
profit for the year. If he spent more than he took in, he suffered a loss. He
depends on his store accounting records to get all this information.
The owner of a small clothing store can keep records
without much trouble. But a big oil company, or a big bank has many difficult
accounting problems. The company must know how much money is to be paid by its
debtors and how much it owes other companies for supplies. It must know how
much it has lost in depreciation(折旧), or wear and tear
of its equipment. All of this information must be kept in the company”s
accounts. Big companies employ many accountants.
After a company”s accountants finish their yearly count,
their work must be officially examined. Experts from outside company
double-check the records to be sure the accounts are correct.
41. According to the passage, a clothing store owner needs
to keep records of the money he spends for _____________.
A. clothing only B. newspaper advertising
C. all necessary expenses D. housing
42. A small store owner can usually _____________.
A. keep records with the help of experts
B. keep records easily
C. have many difficult accounting problems
D. keep no records
43. In big companies, after the accountants finish the
yearly count, _____________.
A. the work will be well done B. no one will check it
C. the records will be finished D. experts will check the
records
44. We can infer from the passage that _____________.
A. the accountants” work must be checked by the managers
B. the condition of the business depends on the
accountants” work
C. there might be mistakes in the company”s accountants”
work
D. the company often doubts about its accountants” work
B
Are you forty years old and fat? Do you wear fine clothes?
Do you look rich? If so, be careful. There is a pickpocket looking for you.
World travelers, away from home and usually carrying much money, are often
troubled by pickpockets in foreign countries, but they should remember that
there are pickpockets in their own country, too.
A typical pickpocket is under forty years of age, usually a
male. He has nimble fingers and has trained himself in running. Generally, he
carries a newspaper or magazine in his hand. He may appear fairly clever and
pretend to be calm. He has learned his job from another pickpocket, and he
repays his “teacher” by giving him a percentage of the money or things which he
steals.
The good pickpocket always operates in crowded places. Very
well-dressed men and slightly drunken men are the favorite objects of the
pickpocket.
An average-sized department stores hires about six or seven
full-time detectives. These men and women are constantly looking for
pickpockets and thieves. Many police districts have detectives whose only job
is to catch the pickpockets quickly. But a good pickpocket knows these things
and is very careful. He is especially busy on buses, trains and subways between
11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., when
there are many shoppers with much money to spend. He carefully remembers the
payday and bonus times of companies.
Pickpocketing and stealing from a shop together represent
about 75% of daytime petty crime in America. The sentence for these
crimes is usually from three to five years in prison. After finishing their
sentence, pickpockets and thieves seldom reform; they usually advance to more
serious crimes.
45. From the first paragraph we know that _____________.
A. only those who are 40 and fat are the aims of
pickpockets
B. only those who wear fine clothes look rich
C. world travelers are only troubled in foreign countries
D. those looking rich and those traveling abroad should be
more careful
46. According to this passage, what does a typical
pickpocket look like?
A. An old gentleman. B. A fat rich man.
C. A clever calm man. D. A middle-aged traveler.
47. Why is a pickpocket especially busy on buses between
11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.? Because
this is a time when _____________.
A. detectives have a rest
B. many shoppers carry much money to spend
C. companies pay bonus to their employees
D. their hands are nimblest
48. If a pickpocket is caught in America, he or she will be
_____________.
A. heavily fined B. beaten to half death
C. put in prison D. driven to remote places
C
You may think that inventions are far away from your
everyday life. But in fact, almost everyone can invent. It”s just that they do
not recognize that their idea could be the start of an invention. Once
inventors see their ideas have some practical value, they don”t let them slip
away.
For example, the inventor of the dishwasher, American
Josephine Cochrane, loved to give dinner parties. But she found it took too
long to wash her dishes by hand and too many of them broke. She decided that a
machine could do the job faster and with fewer mistakes. So, in 1886, she set
out to make one for herself.
Like Cochrane”s, most inventions are created to solve a
problem. So, the first and most important step is to find the problem.
You can start by looking at what is wrong with things you
use now. You can ask grandparents or neighbours if they remember ever saying:
“I wish someone would invent something for ...” Or you can look at people in
different areas such as on the street, or at school. Then you might notice
situations or things in need of improvement.
Remember to record you ideas and work. This will help you
develop your invention and protect it when it is completed.
The next step is to think about possible solutions. An
invention is a new way of solving a problem. So think of many, varied, and
unusual ways.
You can often come up with a solution for a problem by
looking at it from a different angle(角度)or thinking
about it in a new way.
Example 1—instead of thinking of shoes as protecting your
feet from the ground, think of using something to protect the ground from your
feet.
Example 2—instead of thinking about how you can carry
oranges home from a store, think of how they can come to you by delivery or
growing your own.
Example 3—instead of experimenting with only one solution,
can you put two or three solutions together, or arrange them in different
orders?
And if one solution doesn”t work, can it be put to other
uses? That was how yellow post-it notes(N次贴)came about—a “failed” adhesive(粘合剂)experiment
proved a weak adhesive had good uses too!
After all, most inventions are not brand new. They do not
come out of nowhere, but come out of things or ideas that already exist.
And the hardest part of inventing, even for a lot of
inventors, is coming up with a problem and finding a solution. Once you have an
idea, you can always get help building your invention.
This problem—solving technique can also work in your
everyday lives. So, why not try it in your studies, in your relationship with
others, or even in the way you look at the world?
49. The main idea of this passage is _____________.
A. how to improve the world around you
B. how inventors invent
C. problem-solving technique
D. that you can invent and how you”ll be able to do so
50. Inventors are different from others probably because
they _____________.
A. find and try to solve problems in a new and better way
B. are born with creative ideas
C. enjoy solving problems
D. consider every new idea as an invention
51. What made Josephine Cochrane decide to invent the
dishwasher?
A. Her love of parties.
B. Her desire for something that could do the dishwashing
better.
C. Her dislike of dishwashing.
D. Her love of inventing.
52. Which of the following is one of the ways to find a
problem?
A. Look at the world from a different angle.
B. Do experiments.
C. Find out things that people are not satisfied with.
D. Never let a practical idea slip away.
D
There are psychologists who believe that the parent is a
large collection of “recordings” that is stored in a person”s brain. These
recordings were made during the first five years of the person”s life. They are
quite complete, and they contain a record of everything the little person heard
or saw. Almost all of them can be recalled under the proper conditions.
A very important part of these recordings is the set of
rules and laws that was imposed(强加)by the young
person”s parents. These rules and laws helped shape the young person”s beliefs
about himself or herself and about the world. And, as the child had no way to judge
them, these rules and laws were recorded in his brain as “truth”.
What do these rules and laws say? Well, that depends upon
what the parent said and did. Some common ones might be: “Be careful.” “Don”t
lie.” “Don”t steal.” “Mother loves you.” “Father is wise.” “Work is good.” such
rules help socialize and comfort a child.
However, some of the other rules might be upsetting,
demeaning or misleading: “Do it this way.” “Don”t do it that way.” “You are
bad.” “You are stupid.” “You are mean.” “You are ridiculous.” Such statements
can damage a person.
Every person”s parent recording is different. Each of us
had a unique childhood. One psychologist simply points out two things (1) each
has a parent recording in our brain, and (2) this recording sometimes “comes
on” and tells us what to do. It”s a voice out of the past, telling us what to
do in the present.
This may give us problems. First, the information or rules
in our parent may be incorrect or out of date. Second, our parent sometimes can
influence us without being aware of it. When that happens, we may do things or
make decisions without fully considering more correct or up-to-date
information.
As you work toward choosing your occupation, you may be
sure that your parent will get into act. You really can”t prevent this ——in
fact, you might not want to. The point is that you should be aware of this
parent that is influencing you. Try to take advantage of its good advice, but
also try to avoid being hurt by the bad.
53. The following statements can help socialize and comfort
a child except _________.
A. Give others a hand if you can B. Be honest
C. Mother loves you D. Man is selfish
54. According to the author, the best decision can be made
_________.
A. according to their own will and interest
B. by considering more than their parents” rules
C. with the help of their parents
D. only based on their parents” rules and information
55. The author writes the passage in order to _________.
A. criticize parents for their rules and laws
B. tell parent not to influence their children
C. describe and explain the influence of parents” rules and
laws
D. warn young people not to be affected by their parents”
rules and laws
56. What”s the author”s opinion about parents” rules and
laws?
A. The passage doesn”t mention it. B. No garden without
weeds.
C. Parents are always right. D. Parents” rules and laws are
out of date.
E
Hormone levels may be affected by the weather. Gloomy
weather can cause depression, but sunshine appears to raise the spirits. This
condition has been given the name SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). Suffers
can fight back by making the most of any sunlight in winter and by spending a
few hours each day under special lamps. Scientists are working to discover the
links between the weather and human beings” moods and performance.
It is generally believed that tempers grow shorter in hot,
muggy weather. There is no doubt that crimes against the person rise in the
summer, when the weather is hotter and fall in the winter when the weather is
colder. Scientists argue that trouble starts more often in hot weather merely
because there are more people in the street when the weather is good.
Psychologists have also studied how being cold affects
performance. Researchers compared divers working in icy cold water at 5℃
with others in water at 20℃ (about swimming
pool temperature). The cold water made the divers worse at simple arithmetic
and other mental tasks. But Significantly, their performance was impaired
as soon as they were put into the cold water before their body had time to cold
down. This suggests that the low temperature did not slow down mental
functioning directly, but the feeling of cold distracted the divers from their
tasks.
Psychologists have conducted studies showing that people
become less skeptical(多疑的)and more optimistic when the
weather is sunny. However, this apparently does not just depend on the
temperature. An American psychologist studied customers in a
temperature-controlled restaurant. They gave bigger tips when the sun was
shining and smaller tips when it wasn”t, even though the temperature was the
same in the restaurant. A link between weather and mood is made believable by
the evidence for a connection between behavior and the length of the daylight
hours. This in turn might involve the level of a hormone called melatonin,
produced in the pineal gland(腺)in the brain. Research
shows that melatonin plays an important part in the seasonal behavior of
certain animals. For example, food consumption increases during winter,
reaching a peak in February.
57. Why did the divers perform less well in colder
conditions?
A. They were less able to concentrate on their tasks.
B. Their body temperature fell too quickly.
C. Their mental functions immediately slowed down by the
cold.
D. They were used to swimming pool conditions.
58. The number of daylight hours _________.
A. affects the performance of workers in restaurants
B. influences animal feeding habits
C. makes animals more active
D. prepares humans for having greater leisure time
59. What does “impaired” mean in the third paragraph?
A. improved B. changed C. affected D. stopped
60. Which is true according to the text?
A. Melatonin levels change at different times.
B. Scientists have found out the links between weather and
human performance.
C. Weather is an essential cause of human mood changes.
D. Depression has nothing to do with the time of the year.

书面表达
One possible version:
As we can see in the picture, the young couple go to their
parents” home, but they”re really concerned about their child and pet! They
care little about their parents. A pet is dearer to them, which makes their
parents sad. What a shame!
Some people today are not taking good care of their aged
parents. Parents not only give birth to them, but also bring them up with care
and love. It is natural that the aged parents should be looked after and loved
in return. Besides, how can children learn to love their parents if they see no
love shown to their grandparents? So everyone has the responsibility to enable
his parents to lead a happy life.
