Every artist knows in his heart that he is saying something
to the public. Not only does he want to say it well, but he wants it to be
something which has not been said before. He hopes the public will listen and
understand - he wants to teach, and he wants them to learn from him.
What visual(形象的)artists like painters want to teach is easy
to make out but difficult to explain, because painters translate their
experiences into shapes and colors, not words. They seem to feel that certain
selection of shapes and colors, out of the countless billions possible, is
exceptionally(尤其)interesting for them and worth showing to us. Without their
work we should never have noticed these particular shapes and colors, or have
felt the delight which they brought to the artist.
Most artists take their shapes and colors from the world or
nature and from human bodies in motion and repose(休息); their choices show that
these aspects of the world are worth looking at, that they contain beautiful
sights. Contemporary(同时代的;当代的)artists might say that they only choose subjects
that provide an interesting pattern, that there is nothing more in it. Yet even
they do not choose entirely without reference to the character of their
subjects.
If one painter chooses to paint a gangrenous(生疮的)leg and a
lake in moonlight, each of them is directing our attention to a certain aspect
of the world. Each painter is telling us something, showing us something,
emphasizing something –– all of which mean that he is trying to teach us.
56. An artist hopes that the public will _________.
A. understand him and learn from him
B. notice only shapes and colors in his work
C. teach him something
D. believe what he says in his work
57. Without the artist”s work, the public might not ________.
A. notice particular shapes or colors
B. see the shapes and colors that express his experiences
C. feel his delight in shapes and colors
D. all of the above
58. An artist”s choice of shapes and colors shows that he
believes them to be _________.
A. meaningful in themselves
B. only beautiful
C. a reflection of his experiences
D. worth looking at
59. The writer says that contemporary art contains
_________.
A. nothing but meaningless patterns
B. uninteresting aspects of the world
C. subjects chosen partly of their meaning
D. completely meaningless subjects
B
The appearance this week of TV ads praising president Bush
signaled the beginning of the public battle between Bush and Kerry. In the
eight long months from now till November 4, the American public will be
attacked by political advertising. Both camps in the presidential contest will
broadcast ads, as will the candidates for 33 Senate seats and all 435 House
seats. In addition, there will be issue ads promoting a prticular attitude in
one of the many political problems(over the death penalty, gun control, gay
marriage, taxes etc.)that divide Americans; these ads also tend to support,
even if indirectly, a candidate for the presidency of Congress.
Not every voter enjoys this kind of attention; to some it
feels too much like psychological offense(攻击). Remember that in the US
commercials(商业)are broadcast every ten minutes, so an evening of watching TV
can expose the helpless viewer to plenty of political promotion.
In today”s cartoon David Horsey describes the offense as
more than psychological. “incoming!”is what soldiers shout when they believe an
artillery(大炮)shell is headed for their position; other soldiers are supposed to
dive for cover, as the boy is doing in the cartoon foreground.
What are the messages on the TV sets expressing? There
criticize George Bush: “Bush lied”(probably about the situation in Iraq).“Bush:
A tool of big companies. Vote Kerry!”One of the small sets says“Bush hates
trees”–– an appeal to voters worried about the environment.
In favor of Bush we see “Kerry loves Jane Fonda”. The
American film star who was a famous opponent of the US war effort in Vietnam.
Difficult to make out in the upper right -- hand corner is one of the best
ironies: “Kerry looks like French.”An uncertain point, but Kerry does speak
French rather well; it”s a skill he”ll want to keep under wrap for the
next eight months.
60. All the candidates for presidency, Senate seats and
House seats will express their attitudes to many problems by ads, except the
attitude to _____________.
A. whether citizens should own weapons
B. whether or not some criminals should be sentenced to
death
C. whether commercials should be broadcast every 10 minutes
D. marriage between people of the same sex
61. Which of the following statements can you infer from
the passage?
A. This kind of competition will last for 4 years.
B. Jane Fonda has great influence on the public.
C. Kerry has more chances of winning the competition.
D. The political advertising may end after November.
62. The phrase “keep under wrap”(Para. 5)means “__________”.
A. not to use or practice any more
B. put it into a wrap and put it away
C. keep it as a secret
D. put it under the wrap
63. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. The Significance of Ads in Competition.
B. American Public Will Be Attacked by Political Ads.
C. To Vote Whom? Bush or Kerry?
D. Candidates” Attitudes to Political Problems.

Bird Flu Is Back,
Raising Fear of Spread among Humans
Vietnam, Aug. 27, 2004 –– A small house here by a river
covered with dark green spinach plants is quieter now, the cries of an
11-month-old girl no longer heard.
The girl died this month of avian influenza, of bird flu,
that has alarmed health officials around the world. She appears to have
contracted(感染)the disease from Muscovy ducks, but scientists warn that, if the
virus develops the ability to spread easily from person to person, it could
kill huge numbers of people.
Bush administration officials on Wednesday released(准于发表)a
national pandemic(流行性的)preparedness plan aimed at limiting American deaths if a
global outbreak occurs. “I think what we”re concerned about is looking at
what”s going on in Asia right now with avian flu, which has become a very big worry
for us.”said Dr. Julie L. Gerberding, the director of the Federal Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention.
Experts at international health organizations say they do
not know whether the disease will start spreading from person to person. But
they say that the virus appears to be evolving rapidly and is already deadly in
birds and in some animals in lab tests.
No vaccine(疫苗)is available, although manufacturers are
preparing one for initial safety tests this winter. Tamiflu, a costly antiviral
medicine, only apears effective if taken a day or two after one has contracted
the virus. The virus may also develop a resistance(抵抗性)to Tamiflu, although
that has not been proved yet.

fewer people in the world.
B. They don”t wish to see too many people die of the deadly
disease.
C. They want to limit the deaths to a certain number if
disease spreads all over the world.
D. They wish to decrease the deaths in America in case bird
flu occurs worldwide.
67. What have the experts at international health
organizations known about bird flu?
A. They have discovered a certain vaccine available for the
disease.
B. They are not sure whether the disease will start
spreading from person to person.
C. It is evolving rapidly and is already deadly in birds
and animals.
D. The vaccine is effective if taken immediately after
being contracted.

The greenhouse effect is a naturally occurring process in
which the earth”s surface and atmosphere are heated. It results from the fact
that certain gases, such as carbon dioxide(二氧化碳), water vapor, and methane(甲烷),
are able to change the energy balance of the planet by being able to absorb
long-wave radiation from the earth”s surface. Without the greenhouse effect,
life on this planet would probably not exist as the average temperature of the
earth would be a chilly(寒冷)-18 degrees Celsius, rather than the present 15
degrees Celsius.
As energy from the sun passes through the atmosphere a
number of things take place. A portion of the energy(26% globally)is reflected
back to space by clouds and particles(微粒). About 19% of the energy available is
adsorbed by clouds, gases like ozone(臭氧), and particles in the atmosphere. Of the
remaining 55% of the solar energy passing through the earth”s atmosphere, 4% is
reflected from the surface back to space. On average about 51% of the sun”s
radiation reaches the surface. This energy is then used in number of processes
including: the heating of the ground surface; the melting of ice and snow and
the evaportion of water; and plant photosynthesis(光合作用).
72. According to the text, it is ___________ that lead to
the greenhouse effect.
A. the energy balance of the planet remaining the same
B. long-wave radiation of the earth”s surface absorbing the
solar energy
C. the earth”s atmospheric system keeping changing
D. certain atmospheric gases absorbing long-wave radiation
of the sun
73. We know from the text that _______.
A. life can also exist on the earth without the greenhouse
effect
B. the greenhouse effect makes the earth more livable
C. some living things on the earth depend on the greenhouse
effect
D. thanks to the greenhouse effect we can live a best life
74. From the second paragraph, it can be concluded that
_________.
A. about a quarter of the solar energy is absorbed
B. about one-fifth of the sun”s radiation is reflected back
to space
C. nearly half of the sun”s radiation reaches the earth
surface
D. about 55% of the solar energy is used to heat the earth
75. The text is mainly written to explain ________.
A. how the greenhouse effect takes place
B. why the earth is suitable for living
C. the greenhouse effect helps human beings live better
D. how the greenhouse gases work in the earth”s atmospheric
system

M: Could I have my bill, please?
W: Yes, sir. One moment, please.
M: Could you kindly explain this to me? What is item 6?
W: Perhaps I could go through it for you. The first item is
the cover charge. Number 2 is the beer. Then your starter, your main course and
the vegetables. The main course was 4.50, not 3.50, so item 6 is the
difference.
M: Oh, I see. But how was I expected to know that?
W: Yes, sir. They are a bit hard to follow sometimes.
Number 8 is your dessert and number 9 the cigarettes. Oh, and number 7 is your
second beer.
M: And what about the service, is that included?
W: Yes, that”s marked down here, 10 percent service.
M: Good. Thank you. Now, can you take my credit card?
W: I”m afraid we don”t accept credit cards.
M: Oh, dear. What about a cheque with a banker”s card?
W: It should be OK.

Do you know why some animals don”t have fur?
Elephants, rhinoceros, and hippos don”t have fur. They all
live in hot places, where the trick is to keep cool. Being practically hairless
is one way these animals deal with the heat. They use mud, dust, and water to
protect their skin from sunburn.
Whales spend all of their time under water. Their body fat
keeps them warm, so they don”t need for coats. Naked mole rats live entirely
underground, where the temperature stays warm year - round. No need for hair
there!
Hair has a special importance for some animals. If it”s
long and colorful, or short and cropped in different shapes, it can attract
lots of attention from the opposite sex.
Some people call humans “naked apes”. That”s not entirely
accurate, though. An adult human”s body is covered with about five million
hairs –– the same number that an adult gorilla has.

第二节:书面表达(One possible version)
Ladies and gentlemen,
I”m Li Hua, Today, I”m greatly honored to speak here on
behalf of my school. I”m going to talk about the high school education of my
city.
From Chart 1, we can see high school students are from
different family backgrounds. Besides local students, who make up 91%, 8% of
the students are the children of non-local workers. There are ever; 1% foreign
students.
According to Chart 2, the student”s choices after
graduation have presented a wider variety. 60% of them intend to go to
university. 30% choose to enter vocational schools, and the rest 10% plan to go
abroad for further studies.
(1)I think we have more freedom to choose what we would
like to do after graduation. Going to college is no longer the only choice for
most of us as it was years ago.
(2)I think our city government has made more efforts to
help the non local workers. For example, their children can enjoy the equal
right of a good education with the city students.
(3)I think with the economic development of our city, more
foreigners are attracted to set up business here and they are happy to send
their children to local schools to learn more about China and Chinese culture.
I believe the future of the education in our city is
promising!
That”s all Thank you.
