阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

Most people are afraid of bees. Anyone who”s been stung by one quickly learns to avoid bees whenever possible. I learned that lesson when, as a child, I ran into a beehive. Dozens of bees attacked, stinging me all over my body. It was a painful incident, but I was lucky. Those bees weren”t Africanized, or “killer”bees.

Killer bees are extremely aggressive(攻击的). When they become upset, they attack. And just about anything like noises, shiny objects, dark clothes can all cause killer bees to attack. When one killer bee stings a victim, it gives off a chemical. Other bees smell this and go into attack mode. The whole hive will aggressively attack the unfortunate victim. Killer bees will also run up their victims for up to a quarter of a mile. Some victims have tried to keep away from the bees by jumping into water. But killer bees will wait for them to come up and then continue their attack.

Killer bees can be found in South America and the southern United States. They were created when, in 1956, scientists brought African bees to Brazil. African bees were known to increase coffee production. Some scientists thought that these bees might increase honey production, too. So in Brazil, they tried crossbreeding the African bees with European honeybees. The results were disastrous.

The new Africanized bees actually decreased honey production and were very aggressive. Scientists tried to separate the bees, but some of them escaped and began rapidly spreading north. Since then, killer bees have been causing damage to humans, animals and the American honey industry. Over the years, these aggressive killer bees have caused nearly 1,0000 people to die.

What”s the best thing to do if you are attacked by killer bees? Fortunately, killer bees don”t fly very fast. Most healthy adults can outrun them. Experts advise you to cover your face and run!

56. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

A. It”s a better way to jump into water to escape the attack of killer bees.

B. The Africanized bees did actually increase honey production though aggressive.

C. Killer bees didn”t attack humans, but animals.

D. It is usually not easy for a killer bee to catch up with a healthy adult.

57. The writer refers to his experience of being stung by bees at the first paragraph in order to ___________.

A. prove that bees are dangerous sometimes

B. present that killer bees are more dangerous

C. support the idea that people are afraid of bees

D. tell us he had a narrow escape from the attack of bees

58. The underlined word “disastrous”in the third paragraph probably means _________.

A. full of hope B. of no use

C. causing much damage D. exciting

59. We can infer from the passage that ___________.

A. killer bees will take the place of European bees before long

B. killer bees are sure to increase the production of coffee

C. it is difficult to get rid of killer bees

D. killer bees have caused great harm to the people there

Riding on the road? Time to review all you learned in elementary school –– especially if you”ll be riding in traffic.

Always ride on the right side of the street in the same direction as the traffic. Never ride against traffic.

Try to use bike lanes whenever you can. Never ride on the sidewalk(in some places, it”s illegal).

Always stop and check for traffic in both directions when leaving your driveway. Some people in cars just don”t see cyclists.

Watch traffic closely for turning cars or cars pulling out of driveways.

Don”t ride too closely to parked cars –– doors can open suddenly!

Stop at all stop signs and obey red lights just as cars do. Take special care at intersections. It”s a good idea to walk your bike across busy intersections using the crosswalk and following traffic signals.

If you”re cycling with friends, ride single file(单列).

Never change direction or change lanes without first looking behind you and using the correct hand signals. That way everyone knows where you”re going. Use your left arm for all hand signals. To indicate you”re making a left turn, hold your arm straight out to the left; to indicate a right turn, bend your elbow, holding your arm up in an “L” shape; and before you stop, bend your elbow, pointing your arm downward in an upside down “L”shape.

If you ride when it”s dark, be sure to have reflectors on your bike and a battery-operated headlight. And finally, don”t wear headphones while biking –– you need to hear what”s going on around you.

60. The underlined word “intersections”mean “________________”.

A. city centers B. crossroads

C. shopping areas D. high ways

61. What should you do in order to ride a bike safely on the road according to the passage?

A. Always stop and check the traffic in both directions before leaving your driveway.

B. Stay away from parked cars because it might start suddenly.

C. Make a U-turn if a car runs towards you.

D. Walk your bike and follow traffic signals.

62. Which of the following pictures shows the correct hand signal of making a stop?

A B C D

The United States has more than three thousand colleges and universities. Most require high school students to take an admissions test, either the SAT or the ACT. But some have reconsidered.

The activist organization FairTest opposes the requirements. It lists more than seven hundred individual schools now where testing is optional(可选择的). Students can provide their results, but only if they want to. Any student who is interested in these schools can log on www.fairtest.com.

Testing critics(评论家)say one reason to drop the requirement is that preparing for the tests takes away too much time from schoolwork, and life. They say the requirement places too much importance on one test and causes too much stress for students. Admissions officers at other schools, however, say test scores are important but are only one of the things they consider. Still, critics question just how much the tests really show about a student. They say higher scores in some cases might only show that a student”s family had the money for costly test –– preparation classes. Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts ended its requirement in 2001. Mount Holyoke is a small, highly rated liberal arts college for women. Recently its president, Joanne Creighton, wrote in the Los Angeles Times about the effects of making the SAT optional. Mount Holyoke has compared student performance. Joanne Greighton says the study has found“no meaningful difference.” She says the SAT might have made sense in the nineteen twenties when it was developed. College then was only for a relatively limited group of people. But she says American students and schools are too different today for what she calls a “one-size-fits-all test.”

63. We may learn that SAT should be _________.

A. a college name

B. a kind of organization

C. a name of the testing critics

D. a kind of “one-size-fits-all test”

64. The underlined word “oppose”probably means _________.

A. be against B. think highly of

C. make up D. take no notice of

65. We can learn from the passage that __________.

A. all the students will study hard for a high score when the colleges require it

B. the preparation for college admissions test cost a lot

C. the students from poor families will have a much higher score

D. tests will clearly show a student”s ability

66. Joanne Greighton says the study has found “no meaningful difference.”Here the “meaningful difference”refers to the difference in performance between ________.

A. students in different colleges

B. students from different family backgrounds

C. students who take part in the admissions test and those who don”t

D. the teaching results before 2001 and after 2001

67. The writer wrote the passage to _____________.

A. require the admissions officers to give up the admissions test.

B. tell us some universities are reconsidering the admissions test

C. support the admissions test

D. ask students to work harder for good scores

A common element used to make plastics such as baby bottles causes birth defects(缺陷)in mice –– defects that could also occur in people, according to US researchers.

The discovery came by accident, Patricia Hunt and colleagues at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio report. Her team first noted a higher than normal increase in abnormalities(异常)in developing egg cells in females mice. In the mice they were studying this only usually happens 2 percent of the time, but Hunt”s team said 40 percent of the eggs were developing these problems.

They spent weeks looking for the cause.

Nothing turned up. But…I noticed that the plastic cages looked kind of broken,”Hunt said. It turned out that a kind of liquid used to clean the cages had broken down the plastic, giving off bisphenol A. Hunt”s team later purposely exposed(使暴露于)mice to small amounts of bisphenol A for short periods of time and found the abnormalities increased again.

Which the study says nothing about the effects of bisphenol A in humans, Hunt said there is reason to believe they would be similar.

You don”t wait to prove that it does that in people before you take some action,”Vomsaal said, adding that he hopes Congress may now agree to fund(资助)more studies on the effects of bisphenol A.

We are talking about these mice, but we are thinking more about old baby bottles,”Vom Saal said –– noting that hard plastic containers like bottles start giving out bisphenol A when they begin to look broken.

He called on the chemical industry to make more plastic products that do not contain bisphenol A. Some of the funding for the study came from the industry-supported American Chemistry Council(ACC)via the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences.

72. What is the passage mainly about?

A. Baby bottles made of plastics.

B. The harmful effects of plastics.

74. What does Vom Saal mean by saying “you don”t want to prove that it does that in people before you take some action”?

A. Though the study says nothing about the effects of bisphenol A in humans, we must take actions in advance.

B. It won”t be long before scientists find the effect of bisphenol A.

C. You can”t help believing that researchers can find the cause of birth defect.

D. Let”s wait and see the effect of bisphenol A in mice in similar to that in humans.

75. We can learn from the passage that ____________.

A. plastic products can be made without bisphenol A

B. plastic products will give off bisphenol A continuously

C. Hunt and her colleagues are famous in testing mice

Dear editor,

It can be seen easily from the above chart that American students spend 72 minutes on physical activity per day, and those in South Korea 42 minutes. However, Chinese students have only 12 minutes for physical activity per day.

The reasons lie in the following. Almost all the time is spent on lessons in Chinese schools and students are made by parents to concentrate on their study even when they get back homes. Thus there is little time left for their physical activities.

In my opinion, both the Education Departments and parents are responsible to give the students more time for physical activity. Anyhow, knowledge can be learned not only from books but also through activities.

Yours sincerely,

Li Hua

Possible version II

Dear editor,

As you can see from the above chart, Chinese students have only 12 minutes for physical activity per day, while students in America spend 72 minutes on physical activity per day, and those in South Korea 42 minutes.

The Chinese students are forced to spend almost all the time on their study both in schools and at homes. Thus there is little time left for their physical activities.

In my opinion, knowledge can be learned not only from books but also through physical activities. Both the Education Departments and parents are responsible to give the students more time for physical activity.
